Mitsubishi chose the Montreal Auto Show to debut its new small car, which still doesn’t have a name in North America but is called the Mirage in other markets.

Planned as Canada’s newest subcompact, the brand promises class-leading fuel economy and value. Pricing wasn’t announced, but the brand did say the Mirage “small car” consumers 6.1 liters per 100 kilometers, which translates to a little less than 39 mpg. The brand didn’t disclose if that is meant to represent a highway figure or average fuel economy, but the latter would seem essential for the claim to be valid.

Last week during the Detroit Auto Show, Nissan debuted its 2014 Versa Note — a direct competitor to the car pictured above. Nissan says its latest sub-compact will be capable of 40 mpg on the highway or 25 mpg on average thanks in part to its continuously-variable transmission and active grille shutters to reduce drag at highway speeds. It’s also worth noting that the two cars are bring graded on different scales. Canadian mileage figures often differ greatly from EPA estimates.

When the car arrives in Canadian dealerships this fall, it will have a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine with 74 hp and 74 lb-ft of torque.

Mitsubishi confirmed to AutoGuide.com that it plans to bring the as-yet unnamed car to the New York Auto Show later this year before its expected September arrival in U.S. showrooms.

The color and shape bring to mind Slimer from the "Ghostbusters" movies.
