Ford Shares 3-Cylinder Engine Info With Daimler for New Smart

Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler is readying a new three-cylinder engine that will be put to work in the next generation Smart ForTwo, and to gain some insight, the German company sought advice from Ford.

“It’s a very interesting and impressive engine,” engine development director Roland Kemmler of Daimler told Automotive News, speaking about Ford’s three-cylinder Ecoboost. “We have had some discussions with Ford engineers about this engine.” According to Kemmler, Ford shared its three-cylinder engine technology in exchange for info on Mercedes’ Euro6 stratified lean-burn gasoline engines.

Daimler’s new three-cylinder is set to be used in the new Smart car as well as the new Renualt Twingo. It will use turbocharging and target a CO2 figure of 96 grams per kilometer in the new Smart.
