The Volvo XC40 compact crossover is expected to debut in early 2018.

The model was confirmed earlier this year by Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson, who said that a compact crossover is a priority for the Swedish automaker. The company has also confirmed that once it launches its new compact modular architecture, its plant in Ghent, Belgium, will expand its compact lineup that current consists of the V40 and V40 Cross Country. Currently, Volvo builds the S60, V40, V40 Cross Country and XC60 models at its plant in Ghent.

Following the Volvo XC40’s debut, the company will focus on bringing the next-generation V40 and V40 Cross Country to market. All three models will be underpinned by the new compact modular architecture by 2019. The new architecture is being co-developed with Geely Auto of China, a sister brand of Volvo now that it is owned by Chinese Zhejiang Geely Holding.

Volvo purchasing and manufacturing head, Lars Wrebo, also noted that Volvo’s factory in Chengdu, China will manufacture vehicles built on the new compact modular architecture.

The new Volvo XC40 is part of the automaker’s plan to make the XC90 the oldest model in its lineup by 2019.
