Subaru Crosstrek and WRX Earn Top Safety Honors
The Subaru Crosstrek and WRX have both earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+ awards.
Both models have been redesigned for the 2018 model year, and both qualify for the top award from IIHS when equipped with optional front crash prevention and specific headlights. In addition to earning good crashworthiness ratings across the board, the Crosstrek’s optional front crash prevention earns a superior rating. In IIHS track tests at 12 mph and 25 mph, a Crosstrek equipped with Subaru’s EyeSight system avoided collisions. It also has a forward collision warning system that meets NHTSA criteria.

The headlights on the Crosstrek’s 2.0i Limited trim earn an acceptable rating when the vehicle is equipped with high-beam assist, a feature that automatically switches between high beams and low beams, depending on the presence of other vehicles. But without high-beam assist, the LED headlights earn a marginal rating, and the standard halogen lights earn a poor rating.
Improved headlights on the 2018 WRX however help it earn a Top Safety Pick+. The 2017 model fell sort by earning a Top Safety Pick award, because its best-available headlights were marginal. The 2018 Subaru WRX when equipped with high-beam assist and LED lights that come with the Limited trim earn a good headlight rating. Without high-beam assist, the WRX’s headlights are acceptable, while the base halogen lights receive a poor rating.
