Toyota Teases AWD Prius

Toyota has sent out a teaser for what can only be an AWD Prius.

The image shows a Prius with a roof rack driving in a very snowy locale and is accompanied by the text, “Fall is here, winter’s near, but the 2019 Prius performs on roads whether snowy or clear.”

It makes a lot of sense for Toyota to give the Prius all-wheel drive, as it helps the Japanese brand get a leg up on its growing list of competitors, which includes the Hyundai Ioniq, Kia Niro, and Chevrolet Volt, which are only available with front-wheel drive.

Toyota will probably tap its E-Four system that pairs an electric motor with the rear axle. The system is currently used in the Lexus UX 250h hybrid, which disconnects the rear axle at speeds over 43 mph to increase fuel economy.

Toyota will debut this AWD Prius at the L.A. Auto Show in late November, and we’ll share the details on this popular hybrid at that time.
