Preparing to expand its lineup once again, a test mule for the new Smart ForFour was spotted by our spy photographers today.

Unlike the previous Smart ForFour, which was produced in collaboration with Mitsubishi and based on the Colt, the new ForFour takes its underpinnings from the Renault Twingo. The end product will end up spawning the ForFour, a new Renault Twingo, and possibly a new Nissan Micra. The new ForFour will be smaller than the last generation, appearing more like a ForTwo with with four doors, and will use a rear-engine rear-wheel drive setup.

The mule in the photos does not show off any of the new design, most of which will be borrowed from the Smart Forstars concept that debuted at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.

An all new Smart ForTwo is also in the works, and should bow before the ForFour, sometime in 2014. The new ForFour is more likely to be ready for the market in 2015.
