Mitsubishi is recalling 1,402 of its all-electric i-MiEV in the U.S. for problems with the braking system that can lead to a reduction in braking power.

The issue stems from a brake system vacuum pump that can fail, due to a fractured vein. If the vacuum pump fails, the car will have a reduction in braking power, greatly increasing the stopping distance. The recall affects i-MiEVs built from December 2, 2011, through September 7, 2012.

Mitsubishi will contact affected owners and fix the problem free of charge. Owners can contact Mitsubishi at 1-888-648-7820.
