The next-generation MINI, internally known as the F56, is expected to be unveiled sometime this year and will be built on a front-wheel drive platform.

The latest rumor speculates that the next-generation MINI will make its North American debut at the 2013 LA Auto Show, though it is still believed that its worldwide debut will happen either at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in just over a week’s time, or the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

The F56 MINI will see some changes in order to make it a formidable opponent to the Audi A1. It is believed that the proportions of the model will be similar to the current-generation MINI, but will see some major changes to its headlights and taillights, but won’t stray too far away from with the British automaker is known for.

Along with the new design on the MINI, the BMW Group will be introducing a new family of three-cylinder engines. Entry-level models (not sold in North America) will sport under 100 hp while the MINI Cooper should be around 130 hp thanks to a turbocharger.
