Rumors of a Maserati supercar based on the Ferrari LaFerrari have been debunked, as the brand’s CEO has denied reports that the Italian automaker is developing its own version of the LaFerrari.

Speaking at the recent launch event for the Maserati Quattroporte V6, Maserati CEO Harald Wester confirmed that no LaFerrari-based exotic will be sporting the Maserati trident anytime soon, if at all. Wester did say that Maserati will have more special, limited edition models in the works.

It’s not hard to believe that Maserati would rather focus on becoming a real player in the luxury market rather than developing another supercar like it did with the MC12, which was based on the Ferrari Enzo. With the announcement of the Ghibli, it’s clear that Maserati would rather change its annual sales figure from 6,300 to a more respectable 50,000 and achieving that won’t be possible with another high-end, expensive exotic.

Maserati dealers in the U.S. are expected to jump from 64 today to 85 by the end of 2014 as part of Maserati’s continued expansion as a mainstream, global automaker.
