Lamborghini Veneno Roadster: More Money, No Roof

Lamborghini brought its polarizing limited edition Veneno supercar to the Geneva Motor Show with a particularly stinging announcement: there would only be three sold.

In fact, four were (or are being) built but Lamborghini is keeping one. But now the brand is building an even crazier version of its super-limited supercar as a part of the company’s 50th anniversary celebration. Depending on demand, the company will build up to nine models. In August, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann confirmed that the open-air version was coming, now the manufacturer has released its first official photos.

Priced at $4.4 million, the Veneno roadster is almost as expensive as it is extravagant. That’s an extra $400,000 over the hardtop version.

Here’s a quick refresher: the Veneno is based on Lamborghini’s flagship Aventador. It uses the same 6.5-liter V12 engine, only it’s been massaged to make 740 hp instead of the normal 700. The company says its open-air version is just as quick as the coupe, streaking from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds. Carbon fiber vents built into the wheels act like turbines to help cool the brakes and as you probably remember, the monocoque chassis is made of carbon fiber.

Roughly a year ago, the brand unveiled its Aventador Roadster, which uses a two-panel carbon fiber roof that can be stored under the hood. No such shelter exists here. Instead, the cabin and its occupants are always exposed.

The red paint shown here is a shade exclusive to the car called “Rosso Veneno.” Lamborghini will allow the handful of buyers locking them down to customize the cars according to their preferences, too.
