The Maserati Ghibli has been named an IIHS “Top Safety Pick,” recording the best possible score of “good” on all four tests conducted.

Powered by a twin-turbo V6 engine with 404 hp and mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, the Ghibli has its eyes set on competing with the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class models in North America.

The Ghibli didn’t earn the highest-possible “Top Safety Pick Plus” score because it didn’t go through the “small overlap” crash test.

With a starting price tag of $65,600 it’s almost assumed that the Ghibli would be a safe vehicle, but getting the IIHS Top Safety Pick certainly gives it credibility. It performed well on every IIHS crash test: side impact with a large SUV or pickup truck, front moderate overlap impact, roof-crush consistent with a rollover and a rear collision capable of inducing whiplash.

“The all-new 2014 Maserati Ghibli represents a break from the ordinary in the mid-size sedan segment,” said Peter Grady, Maserati North America, Inc.’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “Luxury sport sedan drivers can now enjoy the style and performance expected of a Maserati, and the assurance of its status as a 2013 IIHS Top Safety Pick.”
