2014 MINI Hardtop Officially Unveiled at 2013 LA Auto Show

The third generation MINI Hardtop made its US debut at the 2013 LA Auto Show, showcasing a more mature and grown up MINI than we’re used to.

MINI tells us we can expect a more fuel efficient and spacious Cooper and Cooper S, all while maintaining the vehicles fun-to-drive characteristics. New for the MINI is a three-cylinder engine which makes 134 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. The Cooper S however gets a four-cylinder engine, which makes 189 hp and has a peak torque rating of 221 lb-ft. Either engine can be paired to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

In order to make the cabin of the Hardtop Cooper more spacious, MINI chose to make the car bigger, length has increased by 4.5 inches, width grows by 1.7 inches and the car is even a bit taller too. While that makes this MINI less mini, it does allow the car to seat four-passengers with less moaning from the back seat.

Expect the vehicle to sport a more comfortable ride, while the Cooper S gets dynamic damper controls to enhance the sporty compacts handling. There’s additional driving modes which even help to make the car more fuel friendly or more engaging.

Inside, the MINI shows us a huge departure from past models, namely with the removal of the large center speedometer that older MINIs were known for. A large display is used again for the MINI Connected suite of apps. Not all the quirkiness is gone from the MINI though, the ignition is a unique looking toggle-switch.

This new MINI isn’t for the luddites though, as it is available with Head-Up Display, active cruise control, high beam assist, a rearview camera as well as collision and pedestrian warning.

MINI says the new Cooper and Cooper S will hit the dealers in March of 2014.
