Making its first public appearance at the 2014 Tokyo Auto Salon, the Honda NSX-GT will soon compete in its first season of Japanese Super GT racing, a year before the street car goes on sale.

The racer is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine equipped with a racing hybrid system. Previously, cars racing in the series used a 3.4-liter V8, but new rules coming into place starting this year will see them move to smaller engines.

It’s quite the contrast on what we’ll see in the production NSX, which will be a twin-turbo V6 hybrid featuring the brand’s Sport Hybrid Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive.

Joining the NSX-GT at the Tokyo Auto Salon is the CR-Z GT race car, which won the driver’s and team championships in the GT300 class of last year’s Super GT Series.
