Volvo Reveals 450-HP Four-Cylinder Powertrain Concept

Volvo has extracted a massive amount of power from a small engine to show off the capabilities of its new Drive-E powertrains.

Called the High Performance Drive-E Powertrain Concept, the engine is a tri-turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes, “no less than 450 hp.” All that jam comes courtesy of two parallel turbochargers that are fed with compressed air from an electrically powered turbo-compressor, essentially eliminating turbo lag. Or to put it simply, Volvo turbocharged the turbochargers.

To deliver to the cylinders, a dual fuel pump working at 250 bar pressure is used. This is the other key component in the high-output engine. “Above all, its compact size improves weight distribution between the front and rear axle and lowers the center of gravity – two factors that have a significant effect on the handling, whether it is a race car or a street car,” said Mattias Evensson, Race Engine Director at Volvo Polestar.

Volvo has previously announced its intention to move to an all four-cylinder engine lineup, and currently sells a Drive-E four-cyliner engine that uses both turbocharging and supercharging to make 320 hp.
