Alfa Romeo’s return to North America will get a big boost next year with the introduction of an SUV that will target German luxury crossovers like the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.

According to Automotive News, Alfa Romeo has finished the preliminary work on its first SUV and is prepared to launch the model next year.

Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (which also owns Alfa Romeo), explained that the SUV will go into production at the end of the first half, or beginning of the second half of 2016. This would be the brand’s second brand new model following the new Giulia midsize sedan. The mid-sized sedan will make its official global appearance at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The mid-size SUV will be based on the Giulia sedan, according to a supplier sources. The same source suggested that the Alfa Romeo SUV is code-named project 949, and will be sized to compete with the BMW X3 and Audi Q5.
