Mazda MX-5 Miata Named 2016 World Car of the Year

The Mazda MX-5 has been named the 2016 World Car of the Year.

Announced here at the 2016 New York Auto Show, Mazda’s new roadster beat the Audi A4 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC to take home top honors.

The Toyota Mirai was named the Green Car of the Year, beating out the new Chevy Volt and Toyota Prius. In the design category, the new Mazda MX-5 also took top honors, beating out the Jaguar XE and Mazda CX-3.

If performance is your thing, the Audi R8 has been named the Performance Car of the Year, topping the Honda Civic Type R and the Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe. In the luxury category, the BMW 7 Series captured top honors, besting the Audi Q7 an Volvo XC90.

In 2015, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class walked away with the title of World Car of the Year, while the S-Class won the luxury category, the Mercedes-AMG GT took the performance award, the BMW i8 won for the green car award and the Citroen C4 Cactus won for design.

Automotive journalists from all over the world are part of the committee to vote on and choose the World Car of the Year.
