Tesla is preparing a self-driving semi truck and is already talking with state officials to test its prototypes on public roads.

According to a report from Reuters, Tesla has been in contact with the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) about testing its self-driving, electric semi-truck on the road. According to the email discussion, the Tesla semi-truck will be autonomous and can move in “platoons” that automatically follow a lead vehicle. The company has also met with California officials to discuss its autonomous trucking idea.

Earlier this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the semi-truck will make its debut in September.

Reuters mentions Tesla is discussing the testing of two prototypes in Nevada. “To insure we are on the same page, our primary goal is the ability to operate our prototype test trucks in a continuous manner across the state line and within the States of Nevada and California in a platooning and/or Autonomous mode without having a person in the vehicle,” Tesla regulatory official Nasser Zamani wrote to Nevada DMV official April Sanborn.

Nevada officials confirmed the meeting with Reuters, but said the company has not applied for a license so far.
