The 2018 Detroit Auto Show has kicked off with the debut of the next-generation 2019 Volkswagen Jetta.

The popular compact sedan gets a modernized look and a few features that are new to the Jetta nameplate.

A 1.4-liter turbo four-cylinder engine carries over from the last generation model. It has 147 horsepower on tap as well as a class-leading 184 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard on the base S model, while a new eight-speed automatic is an option on the base S and standard on all other trim levels upwards. Also, the MQB platform now underpins this all-new model. Just like before, trim levels will be designated as S, SE, SEL and SEL Premium. A sportier R-Line trim with exclusive exterior and interior details, as well as an electronic differential, will be part of the launch.

Standard full LED lighting and alloy wheels for all trim levels begin the host of new changes to this model. Other features include a Digital Cockpit display (standard on the SEL and SEL Premium), a 400-watt Beats Audio sound system, App-Connect interface with CarPlay, Android Auto and Mirror Link functionality, and a driver personalization feature that lets up to four drivers customize individual preferences for driver assistance systems, climate control and much more.

Interior wise, new colors and fabrics for the cloth and leather seats will be available. These seats can also come equipped with heating and ventilation. There is also a 10-color customizable wraparound ambient lighting option on some trim levels.

Safety features will be comprehensive across all trim levels and include a standard rearview camera, while Adaptive Cruise Control with stop-and-go traffic functionality, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert, High Beam Light Control, Forward Collision Warning with Autonomous Emergency Braking, and Active Lane Assist are also available.

A stop/start system (a first for the Jetta and standard on all automatic models) helps improve fuel efficiency and a class-exclusive automatic post-collision braking system helps to bolster safety ratings.

Every 2019 Jetta will come with Volkswagen’s new People First Warranty, with coverage for six years or 72,000 miles. The warranty can be transferred to subsequent owners throughout the remainder of its duration.

From the article: "The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta will arrive at U.S. dealers in the second quarter of 2018 with a starting price of $18,545 for the base S model, which is a cheaper starting MSRP than the outgoing model despite the additional standard equipment list." Cheaper and lower cost to build solid axle rear end, which contributes nothing positive to any car. The "new" rear suspension of the new Jetta is very OLD technology. A solid axle can give strength to vehicles designed to carry heavy loads and for towing, but those are two things the Jetta is purchased for.

One of the ugliest cars in the segments period. Styling stuck in the late 90s. Blacks, greys, utter depression in the color palette. If you don't want to kill yourself while driving get a Mazda.
