2020 Hyundai Sonata Spied for the First Time Ever
The 2020 Hyundai Sonata has been spied in a parking lot in Las Vegas, giving us our first real look at the next-generation family sedan.
It appears as though the 2020 Sonata will pull some design inspiration from the Hyundai Le Fil Rouge concept that was shown earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show. It features the same svelte silhouette and incorporates a fastback-style rear end and soft, fluid edges. It also looks as though a large grille will be present up front, another design feature from the Le Fil Rouge. We’re expecting a somewhat radical redesign over the outgoing seventh-generation Sonata, as the sedan’s forgettable styling is at least partially to blame for its underwhelming sales results.
Not surprisingly, this prototype was caught in the company of its main rivals: the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Chevrolet Malibu. With Ford no longer competing in this space, there may be some disassociated former Fusion buyers looking for a replacement vehicle in coming years, and the Sonata will need to be on-par with its rivals if it hopes to scoop these conquest buyers up.

It’s too early to say what engines and transmission Hyundai has planned for the front-wheel drive Sonata. The current version of the sedan is offered with a 1.6-liter turbo, a 2.0-liter turbo and a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter engine and we wouldn’t be surprised if these return with some updates for the new vehicle. Hyundai’s eight-speed automatic or seven-speed dual clutch transmission may also be on the cards.
The 2020 Hyundai Sonata will likely debut sometime in early 2019 before going on sale late in the year.
