New Toyota Corolla Sedan Not Coming Until 2020
A Toyota Corolla sedan based on the new TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform won’t arrive until 2020.
Car shopping website CarsDirect alleges to have seen dealer order guides for the 2020 model year Corolla, which indicated the next-generation Corolla sedan won’t go on sale until early 2020. The order guides also indicated the sedan would be offered with the same naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engine as the new-for-2019 Corolla Hatchback, which is rated at 168 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. The same six-speed manual and CVT automatic transmissions will be available in the sedan as well.

The current Corolla sedan was introduced as a 2014 model year vehicle in mid-2013 and rides on the outgoing Toyota MC platform. The Corolla Hatchback introduced the TNGA platform to the nameplate and also brought with it other improvements such as a nicer interior and a sporty new XSE model variant. The TNGA-based sedan should offer similar equipment when it arrives in a year or so.
You might be wondering why Toyota introduced the all-new Corolla as a hatchback in the US and not as a sedan. The hatchback has more global appeal, so our hunch is that Toyota focused on developing the hatchback over the sedan due to its limited demand outside of North America.
Look for the 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan to make its debut sometime next year before arriving at Toyota dealers in early 2020.
