Kia Carnival – Review, Specs, Pricing, Features, Videos and More

The Kia Carnival is not a minivan, according to the brand. In the United States, Kia refers to the Carnival as a Multi-Person Vehicle (MPV). Kia Canada on the other hand labels it a Life Utility Vehicle (LUV). Regardless of labels, the Carnival is a direct minivan competitor. It features three rows of seating, sliding doors, and a highly configurable interior.

The front-wheel drive vehicle gets power from a V6 engine that utilizes an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Carnival’s SUV looks and premium interior make it an interesting choice in the minivan world.

Kia took the wraps off the refreshed 2025 Carnival MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) at the Chicago Auto Show, with a lineup that includes gas and, in a first for the Carnival, gas hybrid models.

There’s a lot to get to, but let’s start with the hybrid which will be referred to as the Carnival HEV from here forward.

Minivans. The most disrespected vehicle segment, yet the best for anyone not behind the wheel. Nothing on the road is better for carrying a multitude of passengers over long distances. Although customers no longer favor these workhorses, a few do remain on the market, even if they might not actually be called minivans anymore.

One of those vehicles is the Kia Carnival. Called an MPV by Kia USA and a LUV by Kia Canada, the Carnival features the usual three row configuration and dual sliding doors.

Hi, my name is Kyle, and I am a follower at the Church of Minivan.

I admit, by all appearances, I am not the typical devotee. There are no kids in our household. “Household” is a a misnomer too, since we call a smallish condo in the sky home. A condo located in the largest city in the country, no less.

That’s the issue though, isn’t it? There is a pre-conceived notion of who wants, or even likes, minivans. It reduces the entire segment down to a punchline. I’m as sick of the stereotype as Kia seems to be with the M-word itself. The 2022 Kia Carnival ostensibly replaces the Sedona, but you won’t find “minivan” anywhere in the company’s literature for it. Americans will see it called a “Grand Utility Vehicle,” while Canada goes even more big-idea with “Life Utility Vehicle.”

Whatever it’s called, the Carnival is a luxurious people-mover, one anybody looking at three-row crossovers should think long and hard about instead. This makeover could be enough to make them true believers.

It’s been a busy time here in 2021, the Year of the Minivan. Toyota debuted a wholly new generation of the Sienna, ditching the V6 and boldly going hybrid-only for its people mover. And speaking of bold, check out the bullet train-inspired looks. Meanwhile, Chrysler refreshed its segment-leading Pacifica, reintroducing AWD to its sliding-door model after over a decade. The all-paw drivetrain comes underneath a tweaked, SUV-inspired exterior design.

Then there’s the new kid on the block, the 2022 Kia Carnival. This travelling party on wheels leans into the crossover craze in a big way, so much so that Kia won’t even call it a minivan; it’s a Grand or Life Utility Vehicle, depending on which side of the 49th parallel you’re on. We liked it well enough in our earlier Kia Carnival review, but how does the latest competitor measure up to the establishment? Get the orange slices ready, this is going to be a tough game.
