The Volvo C40 Recharge is one of the more unique vehicles on the market. Not only is it one of the few all-electric small luxury SUVs on sale, but it comes in a swoopy coupe-like body style. A near mechanical twin to the more conventional XC40 Recharge, the C40 is one of the most outlandishly styled vehicles in Volvo’s lineup.

It’s only available with a single powertrain option. Dual motors power all four wheels with a combined 402 hp.

2022 Volvo C40 First Drive Review: Style over Substance

Even Volvo could no longer resist the lure of the coupe-over.

The 2022 Volvo C40 is not, as its badge might suggest, a car. It is however, much like the C30 and C70 that came before, a style-first model. The difference is that nobody buys cars anymore. So Volvo has taken its ice-cool design language and applied it to a that most contradictory of segments: the less-practical utility vehicle.

During a recent event, I got the chance to get behind the wheel of Volvo’s rakish SUV. I found a charming, likeable electric eye-catcher, but one that already feels behind the EV curve in some tough-to-overlook ways.

Editor’s Note: Instead of a traditional automaker-organized first drive event, we drove the Volvo C40 as part of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s (AJAC) annual EcoRun, which collects many of the market’s most fuel-efficient vehicles for a long-distance road trip. Stay tuned for more coverage from EcoRun.

Genesis GV60 vs Volvo C40 Comparison: High-Style EV Face-Off

The EV market is growing at such a pace that automakers can now start exploring niches. The latest examples? The Genesis GV60 and Volvo C40.

Both of these all-electric offerings are ostensibly SUVs, but not really. In operation the GV60, with its wild looks and squat shape, is more of a tall hatchback. Same goes for the Volvo C40; it’s right there in the name, the C prefix traditionally going on coupes and hatchbacks.

Both Genesis and Volvo know the market craves SUVs, though. So unlike our last premium EV comparison, which saw two sedans face off, this one pits two high-style crossovers against one another. Even if they saw just as little time off the tarmac. Managing Editor Mike Schlee joined me to figure out which one is the king of this niche.
