There are very few iconic characters that can be recognized worldwide, but Star Wars‘ R2-D2 and C-3PO are undoubtedly two droids with universal appeal.

So as kooky as it may sound, the robotic duo teamed up with Toyota for an ad on its Prius Plug-in Hybrid for the Japanese market. Now the Japanese automaker needs no introduction in its home country, and neither does the Prius model, so for it to have a little bit of fun in marketing its plug-in variant is refreshing to see.

Now obviously the commercial is in Japanese, but you don’t really have to understand it to get the gist of what’s going on. It basically summarizes the fact that the Prius Plug-in Hybrid can be charged to help obtain an overall EPA range of 540 miles, with a 95 MPGe over the first 11 miles.

The ad probably cost Toyota a pretty penny too. George Lucas isn’t exactly known to be overly generous with licensing out his iconic creations.
