After putting out over 140 car reviews in 2012, AutoGuide is looking back at the most popular articles of the year, which include a hyped up cheap sports coupe, a practical family sedan and even a police-spec vehicle.

In the first 18 months of production back in 1964, Ford sold its millionth Mustang, a record that has yet to be broken by any sports car. That legacy continues on today as one of the oldest continuous nameplates in the business. For 2013 the 5.0L V8 GT model now makes 420 hp at 6500 rpm and 390 lb-ft of torque at 4250 rpm, using premium fuel.

Powered by a 2.0L turbocharged direct-injection 4-cylinder, the Focus ST makes 252 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque with a 0-60 time of 6.5 seconds. In addition to a complete aero kit, upgrades include a lowered suspension, 18-inch wheels with high performance tires, larger brakes and custom settings for the electronic steering and torque vectoring control.

Ford has provided police vehicles for a long time with its Interceptor, and now the blue oval brand has given an update to its crime fighting vehicles. Ford worked closely with the Police Advisory Board (which is made up of serving law enforcement officers from across the US and Canada), to come up with a package that should deliver the goods. Key features include standard heavy-duty 18-inch steel wheels and special pursuit rated tires, front and rear disc brakes that are some 60 percent larger than those found on comparable civilian models, a heavy duty suspension, plus heavy duty cooling and electrical systems, the latter with 220 amp alternators to run the required police equipment.

For 2013, the Ford Escape got an all-new look and a major redesign, that now has three engines to offer: a 168 hp 2.5L, a 178 hp 1.6L EcoBoost and a 240 hp 2.0L EcoBoost. Fuel economy for those three engines is: 22/31, 24/33 and 22/30 mpg (for front-wheel drive). New sleek lines define the exterior, representing a major departure from the previous boxy look.

Easily the most hyped car of the year, the Scion FR-S is the one of the cheapest cars on the list but arguably the most fun to drive. Under the hood, a direct-injection 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine makes 200 hp at 7000 rpm and 151 lb-ft of torque at 6600 rpm. The unique engine makes for an impressive 53/47 weight distribution and a center of gravity that’s lower than even a Porsche Cayman.

Nissan calls it the ‘Camry killer,’ and gave the Altima some improved driving feel for 2013. A redesigned rear suspension and Active Understeer Control make for an even more engaging driving experience, while thanks to its updated CVT transmission, the Altima gets a best-in-class 27/38 mpg rating. Seating comfort is enhanced by design and posture inspired by NASA.

The 2013 Fusion comes with a choice of five engines, including three gasoline options, a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. The car also got a major style update in 2013, dropping its mundane looks for a much more striking design. Pricing starts at $21,700 plus $795 destination, while 1.6L EcoBoost models start at $24,495 and 240-hp 2.0L EcoBoost models for $1,500 more.

Coming in at the top of the list is the all new 2013 Honda Accord. Available as a coupe and sedan, the Accord now offers a new direct-injection 4-cylinder that makes 185 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque with a fuel economy rating of 27/36 mpg. Standard equipment includes dual-zone climate control, an Econ button, plus an 8-inch screen with Honda’s i-MID system and a back-up camera. A plug-in hybrid version is also on its way, and should arrive within a years time.
