General Motors CEO, Dan Akerson, has gone on the record to say that Cadillac will be gearing up to take on Tesla head-to-head.

Earlier this year, Akerson had setup a small team to study Tesla, which has become one of the only electric automakers in the world to become successful. Akerson has also announced that GM is aiming for an electric vehicle with a 200-mile range and a $30,000 price tag. Tesla is also aiming to have the same budget-minded electric vehicle to add to their lineup.

Akerson remains skeptical about the American electric vehicle market however, believing that while a 200-mile range EV would be more attractive, range anxiety will always remain an issue. In fact, Akerson believes that EVs need “a generator on board” so that they essentially have an unlimited range. As for the Cadillac ELR, the American automaker believes it will be available later this year or early next year. And while it may be competitive with Tesla’s models, Akerson wants to move its luxury EVs higher up in the market.

It's just marketing talk. When GM will have a $30K 200 mile EV, everyone will because prices of batteries will have gone down to that point. A $70K Chevy Volt is not a competitor to a Tesla, the regular Volt is a far better buy
