Production of McLaren’s P1 plug-in hybrid supercar is underway.

There will only be 375 incarnations of the F1 successor built and the British sports car maker expects most of those to be customized through the McLaren Special Operations division.

Power comes from a massaged version of the twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 powering the MP4 12C that, in this case, makes 727 hp, which is supplemented by and additional 176 hp from the hybrid system.

McLaren installed a viewing suite on is production line so customers can watch their P1 being built. A report in early May suggested the car was already about 75 percent sold with a company spokesperson saying there were already many more hand raisers than remaining units.

Before individual customization, the car costs about $1.3 million and any of the remaining available units from earlier this year were reserved for Europe.
