The next-generation Volkswagen Scirocco R could launch as soon as 2017 according to a recent report, and it could be a global product.

The redesigned Scirocco is aiming to be a full-fledged sports coupe, which means it could lose some of its stylish design. It will however, remain a four seater with a large tailgate and plenty of cargo space in the trunk.

Is the Volkswagen Scirocco Coming to America?

As for powerplants, rumors are stirring that the Scirocco will offer a trio of standard engines ranging from a 1.4-liter TSI with 125 hp to a 2.0-liter TSI with 230 hp and 272 lb-ft of torque. The range-topping Scirocco R will pack at least 300 hp. Diesel powerplants will also be available, naturally, since it is a Volkswagen.

The biggest question is if the Scirocco will finally make its way to America, especially considering how popular sports coupes are becoming. The reality is that the Scirocco’s trip across the Atlantic is increasingly more likely, with Volkswagen recently providing a Scirocco R for testing in the US as a way to test the waters for the car.
