Off-Road Porsche 911 Variant Being Planned: Report

A version of the Porsche 911 Carrera 4 with a taller suspension could be coming as early as 2016, primarily targeting parts of the world where demand exists for Porsche’s sports car, but smooth roads do not.

Porsche is reportedly working on a concept version of the car, which will feature bigger tires, more ground clearance and skid plates called the 911 Safari concept for the Beijing Auto Show in April. With a warm reception, the car could start showing up in the already plentiful 911 roster in 2016, which would fall in line with the 991’s schedule for a mid-cycle refresh.

The car would be aimed at customers in China, Russia, South America and the Middle East.

It wouldn’t be the first time Porsche built an off-road capable 911 if the project came to reality. Porsche entered a 911 SC Safari in the 1978 East African Safari Rally, and it also ran three 911 Carrera 4×4 coupes in the 1983 Paris-Dakar Rally.
