The finalists for the 2014 World Car of the Year have been announced, but the world will have to wait until Thursday, April 17 at the New York Auto Show to find out the winner.

This year’s short list has 12 finalists rather than the standard 10 due to a multiple tie. The cars being considered are the Audi A3, BMW 4 Series, BMW i3, Cadillac CTS, Citroen C4 Picasso, Ford Fusion, Infiniti Q50, Jeep Cherokee, Lexus IS, Mazda3, Peugeot 308 and the Skoda Octavia.

Besides the overall world car of the year, a group of 69 automotive journalists from around the world also voted on the World Luxury Car, World Performance Car, World Green Car and the World Car Design of the Year awards. Each will be assigned in New York this April.

Eligibility for the green car award as well as the design award are slightly different that the others. In the case of the World Green Car, a team of five experts is comprised to study stats and specs and put together a short list of contenders which the 69 jurors then drive and vote on.

For the design award, the cars are taken from the overall world car nominee list, but standalone entries are accepted provided the vehicle is available in quantities of at least 10 in one major market from January 1, 2013 to May 30th, 2014.

For all of the finalists, see the lists below.
