Honda Takata Airbag Recall Expanded by 4.9M

Honda is adding another round of vehicles to a massive worldwide recall for cars fitted with faulty airbags made by Takata.

Honda says that this latest expansion affects 4.89 million vehicles in total, 1.72 million of which are in Japan. The location of the remaining recalls will be announced regionally, though Honda did say that no new vehicles are affected in the U.S. or Canada.

The recall stems from airbag inflators which can explode, shooting metal shrapnel at the occupants in the car. Honda says it knows of no injuries or deaths in the new batch of cars being recalled although six deaths have been linked to faulty Takata airbag inflators in Honda vehicles.

This new announcement brings the total to roughly 36 million vehicles recalled worldwide since 2008 over Takata airbag inflators. A Takata investigation showed that moisture seeping into the inflators can cause the propellant to lose density over time, raising the risk of an inflator rupture.

Honda is replacing the driver-side inflators with units made by Autoliv and Daicel, while the passenger-side inflators will be replaced by Daicel and Takata.

Yesterday, Toyota and Nissan also announced expansions to their Takata airbag recalls, affecting an additional 6.5 million cars. Daihatsu, a Toyota subsidiary, also announced a recall for 260,000 vehicles to replace the inflators.
