Aston Martin’s partnership with Red Bull Racing could go beyond Formula 1 race cars.

Autocar reports that the British automaker is teaming up with Red Bull Racing’s Adrian Newey, a legendary Formula 1 designer, to build a road-going hypercar that is expected to go on sale around 2018 and will rival other supercars such as the McLaren P1 and Ferrari FXX K.

It appears that the collaboration will be between Aston Martin and Red Bull Technologies, which means it doesn’t affect Aston Martin’s rumored return to Formula 1 since that would fall under the Red Bull Racing entity.

As for the Aston Martin hypercar, expect Newey to turn to Mercedes-Benz for the powertrain. At this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, head of Red Bull Racing, Christian Horner, said that Newey was working on a road car project and that it would be inevitable for Red Bull to make a production car. Newey is aiming to make the vehicle the pinnacle of its class, while remaining street legal.
