Fiat’s Abarth performance-tuning arm has plans for the 500X.

According to Auto Express, Abarth wants to expand its range and the 500X is at the top of list for performance modifications. “Besides the 124 and 500, we are thinking about an all-new addition to the line-up,” said Alfredo Altavilla, Fiat Chrysler Group chief operating officer. “The 500X is one of the options being considered.”

The 500X would compete with the Nissan Juke NISMO and the Mini John Cooper Works. To do so, it likely get its power from a turbocharged 1.75-liter four-cylinder engine making about 200 hp.

Fiat doesn’t want a repeat of the Abarth Punto, which did not live up to the performance expectations of the brand. “We went a bit too far with the Punto Abarth,” said Altavilla. “Now our customers won’t buy a fake. If the 500X becomes the addition to the Abarth line-up, it will be everything but a family version.”
