Toyota has issued another large recall for cars that have defective airbags made by Takata.

In total, 1.6 million vehicles are involved in this latest recall, although none of them are in the U.S. The call back includes 22 different models across Japan, Italy, Britain and Spain including the popular Vitz and Corolla models, all of which were built between 2004 and 2008.

The airbag inflators used by Takata can explode with too much force, shooting shrapnel out at the occupants of the vehicle. At least eight deaths have been associated with the issue along with hundreds of injuries.

In total, Toyota has called back about 15 million vehicles worldwide that use Takata airbags, while 19.2 million vehicles total have been recalled in the U.S. as a result of the faulty inflators.

Takata has already been hit with a $70 million fine in the U.S. which can be increased to $200 million if the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration deems the company doesn’t abide by the terms of a five year contract.

As a result of this, Toyota, Ford, Honda and Nissan have all dumped Takata as a supplier of airbags.

Holy crap! Good on those companies for dumping them, this is one of those companies that should just shut down. How do you come back from something like that?
