Tesla Will Stop Offering One of Its Biggest Perks in 2017
Tesla has announced that for its new customers, the company’s network of Supercharger stations will no longer be free.
For all those who order a Tesla after January 1, 2017, only 400 kWh (about 1,000 miles) of Supercharging credits will be provided for free each year. Beyond that, Tesla says that there will be a “small fee to Supercharge which will be charged incrementally and cost less than the price of filling up a comparable gas car.”
More details on the exact price will be released later this year. Tesla says that prices will fluctuate over time and depending on location, but the brand pledges that the Superchargers will never be a profit center for Tesla. The money raised is said to be going into building more Superchargers so that the network can be expanded. Currently, more than 4,600 Superchargers are active around the world.

All existing owners and all who order a Tesla before January 1, 2017 and take delivery before April 1, 2017 will continue to receive Supercharging for free.
Tesla did previously announced that customers would have to pay for Supercharging its upcoming Model 3, but until now, the brand has maintained that the Supercharging network would be “free for life” on all Tesla vehicles.
