Subaru WRX STI Type RA is the Track-Tuned Subie You Want

Any fears that the Subaru WRX STI Type RA would fall short of its billing as a track-tuned terror can officially be put to rest.

Released alongside the turbocharged Subaru BRZ tS, the Type RA has been amped up in every way imaginable to improve the car’s already stout performance. It starts with a carbon fiber roof panel and massive carbon fiber rear wing, two key components in the RA’s quest for weight reduction, while the trunk-mounted spare has also been pulled to shave pounds.

Under the hood is the same 2.5-liter boxer engine found in the standard STI model, though a fistful of new components have been added this time around. The turbo four-cylinder gets a new cold-air intake and high-flow exhaust system, as well as stronger pistons and a retuned ECU, which combine to provide a slight increase in output. The WRX STI Type RA makes a manufacturer-estimated 310 horsepower compared to 305 ponies in the standard STI.

All 500 units will come equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox that’s had its third gear ratio revised to improve acceleration, and a short-throw shifter poking up through the center console.

Stuffed behind the 19-inch BBS forged alloy wheels wrapped in Yokohama Advan Sport tires are Brembo monobloc brakes that feature six pistons in the front and two in the back, while the entire suspension setup has been revised to improve handling. Bilstein dampers have been added at all four corners, while the front struts have been inverted and double wishbones have been added to the rear.

Aesthetically, an STI front spoiler has been added, while the mirrors, antenna and fender badges come finished in black and the grilled and rear bumper cover get red surrounds. Inside, the cabin gets a ton of red accents, including stitching and bolsters on the Recaro seats. The steering wheel is wrapped in suede, and a console-mounted plaque has been added to show off the Type RA’s exclusivity.
