BMW looked to its past for inspiration when designing the 3-Series Edition models, which are the latest limited-run versions of the German four-door.

The 3-Series Edition models, which entered production this week, consist of the Edition Sport Line Shadow, the Edition Luxury Line Purity and the Edition M Sport Shadow. All three of the equipment packages will be available on the 3-Series sedan and the slightly more practical 3-Series Touring.

Both the Edition Sport Line Shadow and the Edition M Sport Shadow aim for a sportier look with black exterior trim, black kidney grilles, chrome black exhaust tips and 18-inch twin-spoke wheels. The M Sport Shadow goes beyond cosmetics with M Sport suspension, an M aerodynamics package and M lightweight alloy wheels. The M Sport Shadow features some additional interior equipment as well in the way of leather sport seats with blue stitching, an M steering wheel and M doorsill trims.

The Edition Luxury Line Purity chases a more luxurious feel with satin-finish aluminum trim, aluminum BMW kidney grilles, an aluminum exhaust tip and 17-inch alloy wheels. The interior builds on the luxury ethos with Cognac leather, light wood trim and chrome accents.

BMW has marked the start of production of the 3-Series Edition models with a neat photo set showing the current 3-Series alongside the 1977 model year 3-Series.
