Honda Civic Type R Gets Destroyed on Its First Day Out

An unfortunate new Honda owner didn’t even get to drive his Civic Type R for 150 miles before someone crashed into it.

First reported by Jalopnik, Greg Ellingson flew from Philadelphia to Boston to pick up his brand new 2017 Honda Civic Type R this past Sunday. On his way home, however, he was sitting in stop-and-go traffic when someone who wasn’t paying attention rear-ended the new Type R. According to Ellingson, the person hit him going 30 to 35 mph and didn’t even try to hit the brakes, which shot the Type R into the car in front of Ellingson. Both the front and rear ends of the Civic are heavily damaged.

Afterward, Ellingson had to endure a five-hour trip back home in a tow truck, with the Type R in tow. In his Facebook post, Ellingson said he came out of the accident without even a scratch, saying Honda’s engineers did a fantastic job on the car. As for insurance, if the car is declared totaled, he will get back 100 percent of what he put into it thanks to Declared Value Insurance. The HondaLink Assist also did its job, calling 911 after the accident and ringing Ellingson to see if he needed assistance.

Stories like these are always sad to hear, especially with a car so highly anticipated as the Civic Type R. Hopefully Ellingson is able to get his hands on another one, but maybe Honda should take a page out of Mazda’s playbook. When the first 2016 Mazda Miata was wrecked, the Japanese automaker stepped in and replaced it for the owner.

Feel so sorry for the guy! Hope he gets it done as new and continue enjoying the ride! Don't worry, be happy :)

The Type R driver should have purchased the Honda deflector shield option and had it set to 10. Also, he obviously was following way too close to the car in front of him so part of the damage is due to his own fault.
