Volvo has earned a top rating from a safety rating agency.

It’s a shock on par with finding out that many French people live in France, but it’s happened all the same.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has found that the 2108 Volvo XC60 is worthy of its highest award, 2017 Top Safety Pick+, when it’s equipped with the Advanced package, which gives it improved headlights.

As ever, the XC60 crushed it (pardon the pun) in the crashworthiness department, with a “superior” rating thanks to its standard front crash prevention system.

To earn the 2017 Top Safety Pick+ award, a car must have “good” ratings in all five crashworthiness tests (small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint) as well as advanced or superior ratings for front crash prevention and an “acceptable” headlight rating, which the XC60 does easily.

The IIHS hasn’t yet tested the XC60 without the Advanced package, so its rating has yet to be determined, but for now, we can at least report the deeply shocking news that the Advanced package 2018 Volvo XC60 is… safe.
