New spy shots could be indication that BMW is readying not only an i8 Roadster, but a sportier i8S as well.

An i8 prototype was recently caught by spy photographers wearing a new front fascia with different headlights. It was expected the i8 would receive some minor changes along with the introduction of the i8 Roadster, but it appears those alterations could entail more than just a minor facelift. Fueling these rumors is the prototype’s deeper, sportier looking front lip, along with the subtle rear lip spoiler out back. Additionally, the venting in the hood is covered up on the prototype – just like on i8 Roadster prototypes that have been photographed.

As for the powertrain changes, the i8S is rumored to get a 10 percent hike in output, bringing it from 420 horsepower to 450. The i8 Roadster is also expected to feature the updated powertrain with the same output. Both cars should also get the latest version of BMW’s iDrive infotainment system with gesture control functionality. New options such as different exterior and interior colors, different wheels and new trim packages could also be in store.

The BMW i8 Roadster and rumored BMW i8S should both debut at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show later this month.
