IIHS Releases First Tesla Model 3 Safety Test Results
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has begun putting the Tesla Model 3 through its safety tests.
On its front crash prevention rating, the Model 3 earned a “superior” score, the authority’s highest distinction.
Its front crash prevention tests comprise of a battery of sub-tests, including ones that evaluate the quality of alerts upon sensing of a crash and its low-speed and high-speed automatic emergency braking system when driven at 12 mph and 25 mph towards stationary targets, respectively, along with performance in handling complete stops.

Scores of “basic,” “advanced,” and “superior” are awarded based on the number of criteria tests successfully fulfilled, using a point-based system, with several Model 3s exposed to the same tests. Autopilot was not tested in any capacity.
The Model 3 also received an “acceptable” safety score for its headlights. These tests grade visibility and lamp reach for low and high beams on straightaways and curves, evaluating performance on both the left and right sides of the road. For perspective, IIHS labeled the Model 3 and Chevrolet Bolt headlights as unacceptable.
