Infiniti’s upcoming electric vehicle platform, which was previewed by the svelte Q Inspiration Concept earlier this year, will underpin every one of its new cars from 2021 onward.

The new platform was designed specifically for use with electrified powertrains and is designed to adopt two different powertrains: one being fully electric, the other with a gasoline range extender. Infiniti President Roland Krueger told Automotive News in a recent interview the powertrains could produce up to 400 hp, while the full electric variant will have a range of about 311 miles. Engineers are still deciding on the pure electric range for the hybrid powertrain, which may feature Nissan’s variable compression four-cylinder.

The hybrid version will have the variable compression engine and electric motor mounted out front, with a second motor mounted in the rear to provide all-wheel drive. Kreuger said a third motor could be added for more performance.

The platform will be fully scalable in order to accommodate every vehicle in the Infiniti range, but won’t be large enough to serve underneath a vehicle as large as the QX80. The Q Inspiration Concept will serve as a direct inspiration to these future Infiniti vehicles, and that includes crossovers and SUVs.

The first of these electrified Infiniti models is expected to debut in 2020 or 2021. The EV platform is key to Infiniti’s future success, with EVs expected to account for a large percentage of its sales going forward – especially in China.
