New Mustang Cobra Jet to Debut This Week

Ford’s bringing the Mustangs out at Woodward this weekend. As a sponsor of the annual cruise, Ford will have the first ever Mustang, the 10 millionth Mustang, the original Bullitt, the Eagle Squadron Special Edition, a brand ‘new production vehicle’ that they refuse to say more about, and more.

It’s all kicking off on Thursday, August 16, at Mustang Alley (corner of 9 Mile and Woodward) where Ford will reveal the mystery production car they have promised at 10 am (check back here for more on that).

Last week, in an interview, Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Performance dropped a pretty big hint (and by hint we of course mean flat out said that it will be the Mustang Cobra Jet).

“Although it already races in a lot of different places with the Mustang GT4 and in the NHRA in a couple different levels — we’re doing new Mustangs in those series as well,” Rushbrook told Autoweek. “Next week, there will be a new Mustang Cobra Jet that gets unveiled associated with Woodward.”

The purpose-built drag racer will be limited to 68 non-VIN examples (a nod to 1968 Cobra Jet) all setup to roll off the assembly line and through the quarter. Powered by a 5.2-liter Coyote V8, the Mustang Cobra Jet sits on a unique four-link rear suspension that locates a Strange Engineering Ford 9-inch rear axle.

Inside, you’ll find an NHRA-certified roll cage, Racetech FIA seats, and more. All of which should be good for a top speed of 150 mph (meh) and a quarter-mile time in the mid-8s (less meh).

Even Ford isn’t planning on revealing the Cobra Jet Mustang, there won’t be any shortage of cool Mustangs on hand. On Saturday, the company is welcoming more than 1,000 classic, privately owned Mustangs for a mile-long cruise. Later in the evening, Ford will corral all the Bullitts in the crowd and let them cruise with the original movie car.

At 1 in the afternoon, Vaughn Gittin Jr’.s Eagle Squadron Mustang GT (which made its debut at Goodwood earlier this summer) will be presented to the winner of the AirVenture auction.

If you’re feeling jealous of the person who won that one-off at auction, we’ve got good news, because Ford is debuting another one-off to be raffled off: a Kona Blue Bullitt. Proceeds from the raffle, which is being held in November for some reason, are going to support juvenile diabetes research.
