If you were excited by the idea of Audi’s R8 supercar getting a V6 engine, well then we’re not really sure what’s wrong with you. But we’ve got bad news. Turns out that the V6 R8 isn’t happening.

The rumors of the R8’s powertrain downsizing started with a leaked production schedule that hinted such a car could arrive next year. It was said to be powered by a version of Audi and Porsche’s 2.9L twin-turbo V6. Like the one in the RS4 and Panamera. Some sources claimed that the spotted prototypes were using the small engine.

Turns out that the V6 won’t be coming. Car Throttle spoke with R8 project manager Bjorn Friedrich and reported that he said “it’s the best engine for the car… We’ll stick to the V10.” So it’s 10 cylinders or bust for the R8. Which is, of course, great news.

Continuing V10 power doesn’t mean that there will be another generation of the car, though. Those rumors are second-hand news from a songbird for another day. All we know is that we’d tell Audi “don’t stop.” Go your own way, and don’t break the chain of the V10-powered supercar. But maybe that’s only in our dreams.
