The Volkswagen ID.7 is an Aerodynamic, Camoflauged EV Sedan Debuting at CES 2023
The Volkswagen ID.7 shows off its EV sedan lines at CES 2023. Well, sort of.
Clad in colorful techno-camo, Volkswagen’s latest EV project debuts at CES 2023. Although the body lines are obscured, VW calls it “smart camouflage,” that “uses unique technology and multi-layered paintwork to create light effects on parts of the vehicle.” In videos supplied by Volkswagen, the ID.7’s paintwork constantly changes based on the angle and light.
Still, despite the camouflage, it’s fairly easy to ascertain the general shape of the new ID.7; it’s a production version of the VW ID. Aero concept showed off last year in China. The ID.7’s shape is smooth and flowing, with a short decklid and coupe-like roofline. There appear to be few changes from what we’ve seen on the concept, aside from different mirrors and what appear to be larger headlights.
The interior, though, is fully unveiled. The same touch-sensitive buttons, and main infotainment screen we’ve seen on the ID.4 and ID.Buzz shows up here on the ID.7. However, the freestanding steering-column attached speedometer on the ID.4, has been swapped for a low-profile screen integrated into the dashboard. Otherwise, it looks to be standard fare for Volkswagen’s electrified products.
The ID.7 uses the same MEB platform as the other ID. series vehicles. But, the ID.7’s form factor and low-drag design allow it to achieve 700 kilometers (435 miles) on the WLTP cycle. Volkswagen is still quiet about motor, battery size, power, and pricing for the ID.7, but the sedan is intended for China, North America, and Europe.
When it goes on sale, the ID.7 may sit in a very empty class alongside the Hyundai Ioniq 6. The shift to EVs has seemingly gone hand-in-hand with the rise of SUVs and crossovers, very few manufacturers are crafting EV sedans, especially ones that aren’t explicitly premium like the Tesla Model 3 or Mercedes-Benz EQE.
The uncamouflaged, production-intent Volkswagen ID.7 is expected to drop in the second quarter of 2023.
