The BMW 2 Series Coupe is a bit unusual in the luxury car world. It does not have many direct competitors as most other manufacturers do not offer a two-door in this class. The 2 Series can be had with a turbocharged four-cylinder or a turbocharged six-cylinder engine.

Of course, if the regular 2 Series Coupes aren’t enough, there is the more potent M2 that can rival many sports cars in terms of performance.

2023 BMW 230i Coupe Review

“Entry-level BMW” doesn’t need to be a dirty term, and the 2023 BMW 230i Coupe is a good example as to why.

This little two-door has become something of an anomaly not only in the BMW lineup, but the broader automotive landscape. Coupes are an endangered species, and the remaining examples have largely organized into a few distinct herds. You’ve got your muscle cars, your supercars, and the expensive luxury grand tourers. But a relatively affordable luxury model that packs driving thrills and everyday comfort into a compact footprint? Table for one, please.

The super-quick M240i xDrive got all the press at launch, and we’re all waiting for the M2 and its promise of a stripped-down, final ICE-only BMW M experience. Yet I’m happy to report that if your budget doesn’t stretch to the six-cylinder models, the 230i Coupe is a happy little coupe that doesn’t leave you feeling short-changed.

2022 BMW M240i Coupe First Drive Review: Focused on Fun

The two-door coupe landscape looks a lot different now than when the first 2 Series Coupe arrived in 2014.

The 2022 BMW M240i xDrive Coupe—the top trim in the US, and the only one available from launch in Canada—enters a market even more focused on SUVs. Here is a car that still promises driving fun in a small package. But the market influences have even seeped into the two-door segment: this one eschews the manual transmission, and the M240i is only available with AWD.

I can almost hear the grumbles. I get it, I do. Spend a bit of time with the latest 2er though, as I did in Thermal, California, and you’ll find a well-judged little coupe, one that makes some concessions to modern market demands, but maintains the focus on fun that made its predecessor such a hit with enthusiasts.
