The BMW i4 is one of the best all-electric luxury sedans on sale today. It’s offered in a variety of trims, including a choice of rear or all wheel drive. Joining the eDrive35 and xDrive50 is a new xDrive40. It offers a bit less power while still offering all-wheel drive.

The real beauty of the i4 though is how similar the car feels behind the wheel to the 4 Series Gran Coupe.

The 2024 BMW i4 xDrive40 is the Best Small BMW

BMW’s approach to electrification is a double-edged sword.

On one hand, building BEV and ICE cars alongside each other, on the same platform, with the same shapes, gives buyers more choice. Unlike a certain Stuttgart-based competitor, BMW isn’t forcing folks to choose between the classics and slightly smaller, more egg-shaped alternatives.

The flip side is that the Bavarian approach invites comparison. The i4 xDrive40— the model I so enjoyed in a recent review—shares floor space with an M440i Gran Coupe. Yet I’m making a bold statement here: the i4 xDrive40 is the single best small BMW car you can buy. Here’s why.

2024 BMW i4 xDrive40 Review: Balanced Bimmer

We had to make sure about the 2024 BMW i4 xDrive40.

When I first drove this latest version of BMW’s most approachable current electric model, I dubbed it “ best version of the best small EV luxury four-door out there.” That was in the prepped and manicured confines of a BMW-hosted test event in South Carolina, however. Could the all-paw i4 hack it in the middle of winter, hundreds of miles north? Over the course of a week, the all-electric 4 Series still impressed, securing its status as the best choice in the lineup.

2024 BMW I4 XDrive40 Review: Gold-EV-Locks

Our favorite EV just got better.

The BMW i4 already won our EV of the Year accolade. Between the smooth operator eDrive40 and the superpowered M50, the i4 showed that BMW’s twin-pronged approach of offering both gas and electric versions of the same cars worked. Not only that, the electric ones were also better; something we’ve since seen repeated in the i7.

Not satisfied with a single win, the folks in Munich have doubled the i4 lineup for the new year. The entry-level eDrive35 brings the cost of entry down, while this xDrive40 offers up the added poise and power of twin-motor propulsion without the price tag of the M50.

BMW M Track Test

Located about a half-hour from Penticton, the Main Circuit at Area 27 Motorsports Park is a seamless ribbon of pavement curvaceously draped over rolling hillsides surrounded by open skies and fields and a 360-degree view of the mountainous BC horizon largely uncluttered by signage and guardrails and infrastructure.

Paved in a continuous pass, there aren’t even any seams in the asphalt—not on the half-mile straight, not on the 357 feet of elevation change per lap, and not on any of the 16 corners. One of those corners is a tricky double-apex deal (one apex is blind!) with a quick undulation separating the two and offering to rapidly lighten the rear of your car mid-corner to giggle-eliciting effect.

2022 BMW i4 Review: 4 Series 4 The Future

“Normal” probably isn’t the word BMW wants me to use to describe the 2022 i4. But I mean it in the best way possible.

Passengers only cotton onto the i4’s electric nature after a few miles of near-silent smoothness. Unless they clock the discreet badging on the trunk, or that the contentious front grille is all filled in, there’s not much to give it away outside, either.

The 2022 BMW i4 blends in well. This all-electric sedan doesn’t shout its enviro-friendly credentials from the rooftops. Same goes for the ample punch it packs, too. The i4 is a great all-rounder, the latest proof that EVs can be good, understated fun. It also just might be the best 4 Series you can buy, period.

The i4 is the first in a new wave of BMW electric cars. While the iX flagship rides on a wholly unique platform, the i4 uses the brand’s uber-adaptable CLAR platform, same as the ICE-powered 4 Series models. Its an approach that the brand is taking with the upcoming i7 and 7 Series as well. BMW chairman Oliver Zipse says this is to give buyers more choice: if you want a 4 or 7, but would prefer it gulped down electrons instead of liquified dinos, then that’s what you’ll get. No slightly different car that may or may not measure up exactly to its ICE sibling (cough cough EQS).

Long Range Testing: BMW i4 and Polestar 2 Head to Detroit

According to Google, it’s 231 miles (372 kilometers) from Toronto to Detroit. The Polestar 2 is rated to 270 miles (435 km); the BMW i4, 282 miles (454 km). Easy peasy.

Managing editor Mike Schlee and I are driving to the Motor City for the autoshow. Not only is it about the same total time as flying, but it’s an ideal opportunity to showcase these two entry-level premium EVs. The Polestar 2 Single Motor and BMW i4 eDrive40 are the respective anchors of their brands’ all-electric lineups. They also buck the market’s SUV trend, two honest-to-goodness sedans that offer seating for five and sizeable liftbacks.

Are these two battery-powered four-doors worthy of their premium status? Will they stay true to their range estimates—and will the charging network cover for them if they can’t? We set off at the crack of dawn to find out.
