Honda’s compact Civic has been a leader in the segment for decades. The latest generation Civic is no exception, giving consumers a lot of car for not too much money. The vehicle is available as either a sedan or a hatchback. As well, there are a choice of engines.

Bigger than previous models, the latest Civic can rival a lot of mid-size sedans in terms of space and design. It remains one of our favorite compacts on sale.

Pros

Big-car feel, Classy interior, Sedan and hatchback shapes

Cons

Pricey, 2.0L is noisy, Best features locked to top trim

Bottom Line

As strong as ever in its 11th generation, the Honda Civic is a high-quality, fuel efficient, and overall great not-so-small car that will have you questioning the need to move up to an Accord.

Honda Civic EX vs Touring: Which Trim is Right for You?

The Honda Civic is a car which needs no introduction. But it comes in a variety of flavors—so which trim is right for you?

The nation’s second-best-selling compact car of 2022—the Toyota Corolla pipped it last year—is one of our highest-rated four-doors here at AutoGuide. A full new generation launched for 2022, bringing more refinement and stretching the definition of “compact car.” There are a still a lot of options, which raises the age-old question: which should you get?

To help you decide, we’re taking a closer look at two of the more popular, uplevel trims available. Both of these models use the Civic’s more powerful optional engine, but naturally vary a bit more in terms of trim (and price). Read on for our Honda Civic EX versus Touring comparison.

Honda Civic vs Kia Forte Comparison: Compact Sedan Face-Off

Traditional cars aren’t dead—and for some, they remain the best new car choice.

In the Honda Civic and Kia Forte, we have two excellent examples of the breed. Both are affordable, not just to buy, but to run, sipping fuel at a rate that no SUV could hope for without battery assistance. They’re spacious, well-equipped, and easy-peasy to park, too.

The Civic has impressed us so much in the last 12 months, we crowned it our 2022 Car of the Year. Kia hasn’t sat idle either, treating its bread-and-butter Forte sedan to a comprehensive round of updates for this model year. Managing editor Mike Schlee and I spent a week with both to see if that’s enough to topple the current compact king.

2022 Honda Civic Hatchback Review: Best Gets Better

The Venn diagram showcasing the strengths of the 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback looks like a Spirograph.

It’s no secret that the new-for-2022 Civic sedan is already the best car in the segment. Refined, big-car feel? Check. A cleaner, premium-feeling cabin? Yep. Still quietly excellent to drive? Uh huh. If you haven’t yet fallen under the spell of a crossover, the Civic offers pretty much everything you could ask for in a reasonably-priced new car.

Now here comes the Hatchback, which wraps all the inherent goodness of the 11th-generation Civic in a more practical shape. It’s a great car made greater still—and with the available manual transmission, it should appeal to those craving that extra bit of interaction, too.

Well, that shape, of course. Like the sedan, the Civic Hatchback has adopted a simpler design than the origami-like 10th-gen model. Half a year of them multiplying on the road has only reinforced my personal opinion that it’s a better design, a move back to the strong, clean shapes that Honda favored in the ’90s.

Honda Civic vs Mazda3 Comparison

It’s time for a rematch.

When we last pit the Mazda3 against the (outgoing) Honda Civic, it was a hatchback head-to-head. The Civic emerged victorious, but this time we’re looking at the classic four-door shape for both.

The current Mazda3 reset the bar for how premium a mainstream compact sedan could feel. With a lux-feeling interior and grown-up driving dynamics, it straddles the line between the categories. Honda evidently took notes, because the latest Civic is so much classier than the edgy previous generation. There’s a lot of carry-over under the skin though—and the Mazda has the advantage of available all-wheel drive, a rarity in this class. So which one is more deserving of your hard-earned?

2022 Honda Civic Review: Highway Star

Hey, is that the new Accord?

I was asked that question thrice during my week with the 2022 Honda Civic Touring sedan. But you couldn’t blame the people for confusing the two. The 10th-generation Civic looked like a toned-down Pokémon while the new 11th-gen is exactly the opposite.

The new Civic’s design is plenty of evidence that Honda is moving away from the boy racer image towards a more mature approach. And people love it, mostly. We’ve already sung the praises about how the Civic is the new benchmark in the compact sedan segment and how great it is as a city car. But what if you want more? Something to drive you to school and work on the weekdays but doesn’t feel like a fish out of water when you hit the open road with the whole family and a full trunk.

Honda Civic vs Hyundai Elantra Comparison

This is going to be a close one.

In the one corner, Hyundai’s dramatic Elantra. This compact sedan is the reigning AutoGuide Car of the Year, offering buyers a healthy dose of big car space, modern tech, and surprising refinement for not a lot of cash. If you’re not about that SUV life, the Elantra makes a good case for itself as all the car you’d reasonably need.

Facing off with the Elantra is the latest Honda Civic. A juggernaut of the segment, the Civic is a perennial best-seller year after year. The last one was still one of the better options in the segment even as it rode off into the sunset. The 11th-generation model has dialled back the Gundam styling for a simpler look, and brought in more modern tech. Is that enough to take down the current champion? Let’s find out.

2022 Honda Civic Review: First Drive

It’s almost impossible to overstate the influence the Honda Civic has on the automotive landscape.

For nearly 50 years, Honda’s longest-running automotive nameplate has been at the top of the sales charts—and peoples’ minds. Everyone has a memory associated with a Civic, be it a new driver’s first car or a silver-screen trio running Spoon engines. So when a new one comes along, it’s a big deal.

The 2022 Honda Civic presents a dramatic step for the model this millennium, precisely because it isn’t dramatic. There’s no wild two-tier dashboard design, no styling cues pulled from the world of Gundam. Instead, this 11th-generation Civic trades on a simple, clean design language inside and out, wrapping up everything that we love about the Civic—impressive quality, spacious interior, well-rounded driving dynamics—into an altogether classier package.

Honda Civic vs Nissan Sentra: Which Compact is Right for You?

It’s tough to compete in the compact segment. The balance between quality and affordability must be struck with absolute precision to create something that will draw in the widest audience.

That’s exactly what Honda has been doing with the Civic for years now, and the reason why anyone else challenging that status quo has their work cut out for them.

The Nissan Sentra has the good looks inside and out to get the attention of would-be buyers. It’s also priced well under Honda’s range, another good sign. How do the two really stack up in a head-to-head comparison? We put the Honda Civic vs Nissan Sentra in a comparison of features and capabilities to find out.

Honda Civic vs Volkswagen Jetta: Which Compact is Right for You?

For 2022, the Honda Civic came out with a redesign of the exterior and interior. The perennial favorite now sports a cleaner, less controversial design than the previous generation, with a larger wheelbase and corresponding price increase to offset the upgrade.

The Volkswagen Jetta also receives a minor refresh for the year, but the changes are minor and mostly cosmetic. A new engine borrowed from the Taos now finds its way into the lineup, and with a starting price of just $21,360 (including destination), it drives the bargain play against the competition.

Does the new Jetta offer enough to lure potential buyers away from the obvious choice? It’s the Honda Civic versus Volkswagen Jetta in a head-to-head comparison of features and capabilities.

Honda Civic vs Toyota Corolla: Which Compact Sedan is Right For You?

Crossovers might be the norm but the compact sedan isn’t out of the running yet.

It’s no secret that compact crossovers are more popular than ever before. They might essentially be large hatches on stilts, but the boxy shape and edgy styling seem to attract customers in throngs. Where some manufacturers have all but given up on the compact sedan, it is heartening to see the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla soldier on.

Where most sedans lose out to compact crossovers, the aforementioned titans of the family sedan segment are still in high demand. The Civic and the Corolla offer an ideal option for anyone looking for a compact, functional and affordable family vehicle. While short on luggage capacity compared to crossovers, their comfort levels and practicality cannot be questioned. With the 2022 Civic, Honda has pushed the compact sedan envelope even further. So does its biggest home turf rival, the Toyota Corolla still stand a chance against the Civic or is the Honda now the go-to choice for compact sedans? Let’s find out.
