The first photo of Maserati‘s performance SUV has leaked onto the net. Or has it?

The above picture appeared in an Frankfurt Auto Show preview booklet created by Automotive News Europe and seems to give a good idea of what the new machine will be like, sharing a platform with both the new Mercedes ML and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

On closer inspection the new truck appears to actually be an artist’s rendering, with some rather two-dimensional cues, not to mention the artists signature under the driver’s side front of the photo.

Designed to take on the likes of the Porsche Cayenne, the new truck could be powered by the automaker’s 4.7-liter V8 engine and is slated to be built in America.

Could Maserati’s SUV look like this? Certainly. But we’ll have to wait until the official debut on September 13th to find out. Until then, see AutoGuide’s complete Frankfurt Auto Show preview here.
