McLaren 650S Goes 0-60 in Under Three Seconds

British exotic car builder McLaren just announced technical details for its new 650S supercar.

The familiar 3.8-liter twin turbo V8 makes 650 metric horsepower (641 hp) at 7,250 rpm and 506 lb-ft of torque at 6,00 rpm, which helps it rocket from 0-62 mph (100km/h) in a scant three seconds. That power is sent through a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox to the rear wheels.

It will reach 124 mph in only 8.4 with a top speed of 207 mph. For perspective, that means this is not only faster than the 12C it sits above, but also the vaunted F1 supercar.

McLaren plans to sell the car as both a coupe and convertible from launch. Presumably, the open-top models will use roof mechanics similar to the 12C with a hard panel that tucks away. Those brakes will screech the car to a stop from 62 mph in 100 feet, from 124 mph in 404 feet and from 186 mph in 889.

Other noteworthy performance pieces include carbon ceramic brakes sitting behind unique alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires.

While the company stressed today that its car is meant to perform on par with “stripped out road racers,” it also underscored the effort it put into making the 650S a comfortable car to sit in. It offers Bluetooth pairing for your phone, navigation, satellite radio and surfaces trimmed in Alcantara. Optional fixed carbon fiber racing seats are available as are a rear-view camera, power adjusting steering column and plenty of carbon fiber add-ons if you want them.

The car comes with four powertrain modes: normal, winter, sport and track. Excluding “winter” mode, the same settings are also available for chassis adjustments.

McLaren will officially debut the car in Geneva next week and hasn’t said when it will officially launch or how much the car will cost.
