Mitsubishi Lancer Models Recalled for Potential Fuel Leak
Approximately 1,500 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Ralliart models are being recalled for potential fuel leaks.
Affected models are from the 2014-2015 model years and according to Mitsubishi, they were built with a parking brake cable that rubs on the fuel tank, wearing away the protective coating.
As a result, the issue can eventually cause rust to form, creating a pinhole where fuel can leak. Naturally a fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire. The Japanese automaker admitted that the problem was traced back to an assembly line changeover for the turbocharged Lancer models. Workers accidentally continued installing parking brakes cables for non-turbo models, leaving insufficient clearance for the fuel tank.

Mitsubishi said that it has not received any reported field claims related to the issue but began a recall due to the theoretical risk posed by the wrong parking cable being installed. Dealerships will replace the parking cables in affected vehicles and the fuel tanks will be inspected and replaced if the protective coating shows signs of abrasive wear.
